Grief Encounter South West

As a valued friend and supporter of Grief Encounter, and The Rainbow Centre for Children Bristol, we are thrilled to let you know about an exciting development within our charity.

As you may already know, in November 2016, The Rainbow Centre Bristol partnered with Grief Encounter, one of the UK’s leading childhood bereavement charities, to increase the support they could offer for the bereaved children and young people of Bristol and the surrounding areas.

Over the last 15 years, Grief Encounter has established a pioneering ‘Family Programme’ which includes one-to-one counselling, workshops, specialist resources, a bespoke ‘Grief Relief Kit’, residential camps and ‘Family Fun’ days. They now offer support to some 400 bereaved children and young people monthly, offering their unique services; including an interactive website, e-counselling and telephone helpline, GriefTalk.

“After evaluating the success of our partnership with this rapidly growing organisation over the last few years, we feel it is time to take our relationship to the next level, and are thrilled to announce we will be fully merging as of 31stJuly 2019, to become Grief Encounter South West.We share the same mission, values, goal and ethos and as one unified charity we will be able to combine our ideas and resources, building upon one cause and organisation together, spreading greater awareness and delivering our services to an increased number of children and families in crisis.

“1 in 29 children in the UK will lose a parent by the time they reach 16 years old. This equates to one in every classroom, and although wehave been providing bereavement therapy to children and their families for over 30 years,as a small charity with limited funds and resources we are currently only able to support 2% of bereaved children in our local area. Our upcoming merger with Grief Encounter will mean that professional and innovative support can be available to more children, and their families, nationwide.

“Grief Encounter South West will be maintaining the great reputation of The Rainbow Centre whilst bringing in Grief Encounter’s programmes and initiatives, to include group work, fun days, residential camps, drop ins, grief relief kits, online support, a telephone helpline and various resources.

“We will continue to operate from our homely premises in Knowle and our current services will not be affected, we will however operate with a new charity number under the name of Grief Encounter South West. Anyone who has made a donation or fundraised for us can be assured that their money will continue to be used to provide therapy to bereaved families, as it was intended.

“We very much look forward to the exciting times ahead and the positive outcomes this will bring to the people of Bristol and the surrounding areas.

Many thanks for your continued support, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you would like any further information.” Karmen Losey, Grief Encounter South West Director.
