November 2018

Katherine Jenkins OBE, and Grief Encounter patron, launched Children’s Grief Awareness Week 2018 with the online video release of track, ‘Jealous of The Angels’. The song, launched on 15th November, from her soon to be released album, ‘Guiding Light’, has been performed with the Grief Encounter Children’s Choir, featuring 14 bereaved children aged from 5 – 11 years old.

Losing her own father to cancer at the age of 15, Katherine comments, “When I was 15 and getting over the death of my father, I saw an amazing grief counsellor who helped me process what had happened & helped me understand my feelings. I really don’t think I would be this person today without that help. Grief Encounter is an incredibly important charity which does just that – works with children who’ve lost a parent or a sibling and helps them come out of it the other side. Singing with the Grief Encounter Choir was an afternoon of my life that I’ll never forget. We laughed, we cried, we shared stories over pizza & remembered those we were singing for. Thank you to the boys and girls who stole my heart – I can’t wait to sing with you again!”

The Grief Encounter Children’s Choir, one of the unique therapeutic services offered by the charity, was set up to provide alternate creative therapy for children who did not feel comfortable with, or are unable to benefit from, traditional counselling methods. Dr. Shelley Gilbert MBE, founder of Grief Encounter comments “At Grief Encounter, we offer services from the age of 3 years old. With those very young children who are not able to express themselves verbally, or even those who are older but not in a position to explain how they feel, we give them alternate therapeutic tools to play, have fun and express themselves through a creative medium such as singing. No child is too young for support. We are thrilled that Katherine has helped us with this project, identifying with the children, who so treasured spending this memorable day with her.”
